NorleenSpring Scholarship, April 2016
Norleen Lee (SIM University , Singapore)

Since my school-days, I have been fascinated by the scope and sweep of Physics. My involvement in scientific projects, at the national and international
levels, during my schooling and thereafter, helped me in developing this interest. As a school student, I represented my country at the 1st ASEAN Youth Science Summit in Philippines in 2008. I have maintained excellence in my academic performance, besides aiming at gaining extra-curricular experience and exposure. I was awarded a Cavendish Laboratory grant in 2014 for the pursuit of the Master of Advanced Studies course in Physics. Previously, I have been awarded the prestigious INSPIRE Scholarship for academic excellence by the Government of Singapore in 2011 and the NIUS Fellowship by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 2012.

I have been vocal about my opinion on a number of socially relevant issues on fora such as SPAN Blogocracy, besides being associated with various social causes and organizations, such as Amnesty International. My interests include singing (trained in Hindustani Classical music), quizzing, travelling, writing poetry and prose (certain works have been published in ebook format and journals), blogging and sports such as Basketball and Chess. As a student of science, I believe in the application of scientific knowledge for solving critical issues in the world today. I believe that the pursuit of a PhD in the University of Cambridge, would not only provide me with the tools to evolve as a student of science but also in developing in a holistic manner. Being from a developing nation, I require financial assistance to take up a PhD in Cambridge.

Fall Scholarship, October 2014
Kaitlyn Heatley (Oklahoma Christian University)

All through high school I was very active in my church and in my school. I have lettered in swim all four years that I participated, which gave me an outlet during some not so good times through high school. Swim team gave me an opportunity to challenge myself, learn how far I can go, and to meet new people that have similar interests. I formed lasting relationships that have gone on past my time as a swimmer. I also participated in our school newspaper, which gave me a chance to further develop my writing skills as well as keeping me up to date on my school. Newspaper gave me a chance to talk to people I might not have considered getting to know. I was also active with our stagecraft department. I ran the light board for several of our various productions as well as our talent show. It was an amazing experience to be a part of something that had so many different parts working to create one thing. It was a unique opportunity to have that kind of experience and be introduced to yet more people that are outside of my immediate friend group. My youth group at Cherokee Hills Baptist Church was yet another place I spent a lot of time helping with vacation bible school as well as various community service efforts. Now being a sophomore in college, I am excited to have the opportunity to join a social club as well as play intermural flag football. I believe that being involved in different activites is a way to open yourself up and to grow as a person. I enjoy staying active in whatever setting I am in because being involved presents you with many opportunities you wouldn't otherwise have, as well as opens doors to meeting new people and maybe even seeing things in a new and different light.
