Office Lighting When I interned at a local magazine a few years ago, I loved what I was doing but when the office lighting was below par, I could barely see what I was typing and I had to stare at the screen a little to see what I was typing. This didn’t make for good ergonomics obviously and my back hurt at times from having to lean throughout my day. This is one of many reasons why office lighting makes a difference in workplace productivity. When a business improves its’ office lighting, everyone gets more excited about working their cubicles. And it doesn’t make employees feel drab at work. (never a good feeling to be drab.) Natural light is the best office lighting because the employees can see that there’s actual hustle and bustle outside their windows, and the sunlight that comes through the windows keep employees’ spirits up while they’re working on lengthy projects in the office. When I worked at the magazine, I used to open my blinds a little so I can see the rest of the community while I worked. It was exciting to hear the men crack jokes outside the building as they walked or seeing plump babies in strollers when I did my eye exercises to get a break from the screen. Aside from blinds, you can also install solar panels or a sunroof. Floor lamps are excellent for office lighting because the light targets a certain workspace area and you don’t have to worry about having to get up from your seat and adjust the dimmer or turn on the table light when it gets overcast at some point in the day. I like the tall arc floor lamp because this lamp gives me enough lighting without being overpowering. I own a few of these at home and I brought one to work recently. Track lights work well for the office because you can adjust them in any direction you choose to get the best lighting for certain tasks. At an office I worked for five years ago, the boss installed track lights all across the main office area and we liked how they provided the right kind of lighting for us. He also included this large Tiffany-style contemporary recessed light in the ceiling to provide extra but subtle light. For the office foyer, why not give your customers luxury and install a chandelier in the foyer? The chandelier creates a “Welcome to my company, have a seat” feel to the office and some of the best places for a chandelier include the hospital, dental office, bank, mortgage company, and a spa. Personally, I would feel less nervous about a hospital visit if it didn’t appear so cold and drab. The chandeliers don’t always have to be made of brass. In fact, you can install a red or black chandelier.
