Tobia Scarpa
Tobia Scarpa was born in Venice on January 1st, 1935. He started working in the field of glass in Murano in 1958. Worked closely with Afra Scarpa, and together created many successful pieces in the knoll international collection. Tobia Scarpa works in the fields of architecture, design and restoration. Sarpa graduated in architecture from the University of Venice in 1969 and in the same year received the "Compasso d’Oro" prize for his Soriana Sofa.
He has been a lecturer at the University of Venice Faculty of Arts and Design since 2002. The Italian Institute of Culture dedicated personal exhibitions to Scarpa in Chicago in October 2004, Los Angeles in 2005 and Washington in 2006. Of his many architectural works, that which represents him best is the Benetton Group complex in the Castrette di Villorba (Treviso) industrial area, which is considered to be a functional-aesthetic paradigm and a prime example of industrial architecture. He has received numerous awards including the "Compasso d’Oro" career award (2008). His works are to be found in major museums worldwide, including the Louvre in Paris, which is home to his Libertà chair.
